According to Wikipedia, bookmarks have been around Planet Earth for the longest time (think first century AD). They didn’t always look like the fancy page markers we’re used to seeing everywhere now, though. They were plain parchment strips or a piece of cord sewn or glued into the spines of books and nestled between pages to mark spots. Way back then, people figured using parchment or cords were effective in a way where they wouldn’t do the pages any harm. And so, the common bookmark then grew to become a popular collectible amongst avid readers.
